Your dentist has suggested a zirconia crown — a metal-free, tooth-coloured option increasingly popular for both front and back teeth. Here's how zirconia compares to traditional porcelain fused to metal crowns.
What Is Zirconia?Zirconia is a type of ceramic made from zirconium dioxide. It's extremely strong and durable, making it ideal for dental restorations. Zirconia crowns are metal-free and have a natural, tooth-coloured appearance.
Modern zirconia is translucent enough to mimic the light-reflecting properties of natural teeth. This makes it an excellent choice for visible teeth at the front of your mouth.
Advantages of Zirconia CrownsZirconia crowns are biocompatible, meaning they're unlikely to cause allergic reactions or gum irritation. They resist staining and don't conduct heat or cold as much as metal-based crowns, reducing sensitivity.
The strength of zirconia means less tooth reduction is needed during preparation. This preserves more of your natural tooth structure. Zirconia also bonds well to tooth enamel for a secure fit.
How Does It Compare to Porcelain Fused to Metal?Traditional porcelain fused to metal (PFM) crowns have a metal base covered with porcelain. The metal can sometimes show as a dark line at the gum margin, especially if your gums recede.
Zirconia crowns have no metal base, so no dark line appears. They transmit light more naturally, giving a better cosmetic result. Zirconia is also more durable than PFM in many cases.
Are There Any Drawbacks?Zirconia crowns can be more expensive than PFM crowns due to the advanced materials and manufacturing process involved. Some older types of zirconia were too opaque, but modern versions look much more natural.
For back teeth where maximum strength is needed, zirconia performs excellently. For front teeth, your dentist might recommend layering porcelain over zirconia for the most natural appearance.
How Long Do They Last? With proper care, zirconia crowns can last 15 years or more. They don't decay, but the underlying tooth can still develop decay around the edges if you don't maintain good oral hygiene.
Regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups will help your zirconia crown serve you well for many years.
