Title: Why Does My Tooth Hurt Only at Night? Meta Description: tooth pain that worsens at night has specific causes related to your lying position, blood flow changes, and sleep habits. Learn what's driving it and when to seek urgent dental care.

If your toothache only seems to kick in once you lie down, you're not imagining it. There are real, identifiable reasons why dental pain often worsens at night — and most of them are worth getting checked out.

When you lie flat, blood pressure in your head and jaw increases. For a tooth that's already inflamed or infected, this extra pressure can stimulate the nerve inside the tooth and make the pain feel much more intense. That's why many people with an abscess or advanced decay find the pain is worst just before sleep and again first thing in the morning.

Common Night-Time Tooth Pain Causes

One of the most common culprits is nocturnal bruxism — that's grinding or clenching your teeth while you sleep. You might not even be aware you're doing it. The constant pressure on your teeth can cause widespread aches, particularly in the molars at the back. Many patients wake up with jaw soreness or a dull, spreading toothache without knowing why.

Another frequent cause is a deep cavity or dental infection close to the nerve. During the day, you're upright, distracted, and drinking fluids — all of which can temporarily reduce inflammation pressure. At night, with no relief, the pulse-like throb becomes impossible to ignore.

Sinus pressure can also mimic tooth pain, particularly in the upper molars. If you're suffering from allergies, a cold, or sinus congestion, lying down allows fluid to pool and press on the sinus cavities above your upper teeth.

When to See a Dentist

Night-time tooth pain that keeps you awake is not something to wait out. If the pain is sharp, throbbing, or worsening through the night, or if you notice any swelling in your face or gums, book an emergency appointment. A dental infection left untreated can spread — and that is genuinely serious.

If the pain is related to grinding, a custom-fitted night guard from your dentist can protect your teeth and give you much better sleep. Don't put up with the ache.
