When Can You Drive After Wisdom Teeth Removal? The Legal and Safety Answer

You need to go home after wisdom tooth surgery. Can you drive yourself? The answer is more complicated than it sounds — and the law is clear about one thing.

You need to go home after wisdom tooth surgery. Can you drive yourself? The answer is more complicated than it sounds — and the law is clear about one thing.

The short answer is: probably not. Most dentists and oral surgeons will not extract your wisdom teeth and send you home to drive. Here is why.

Why you cannot drive immediately after

The sedation or anaesthesia used during wisdom tooth extraction affects your coordination, reaction time, and mental alertness. You might feel fine, but your body is still processing the medication.

After sedation, you legally cannot drive for 24 hours. This is not a suggestion — it is a requirement under UK road traffic law. If you are caught driving under the influence of sedation drugs, you face the same penalties as drink driving.

What if they only used local anaesthetic?

Even with just a local injection to numb your mouth, you should not drive immediately after. Your mouth is numb, your jaw feels strange, and your reaction time is affected by the stress and anxiety of the procedure itself.

Most dental practices require you to have someone accompany you for any procedure involving sedation. Driving yourself is not allowed, regardless of the anaesthetic type used.

The practical reality

Arrange for someone to pick you up before your appointment. They should stay in the waiting room so we can confirm you are going home safely. You need a responsible adult to accompany you for at least the first few hours after surgery.

Public transport after wisdom tooth extraction is also not ideal. The extraction site is vulnerable, and crowded buses or trains increase the risk of accidental knocks or complications. A private ride home in a straight line is best.

What about the drive home itself?

Even with a companion driving, avoid long journeys on the day of surgery. Go straight home. If you live far from the practice, consider staying nearby the night before or arranging alternative transport.

Your jaw will be sore and your mouth will be gauze-packed. You will not be able to talk easily or eat comfortably. Focus on getting home safely and starting your recovery.

When can you drive again?

After local anaesthetic alone: wait until the numbness has fully worn off and you feel completely normal. Typically the next day.

After sedation or general anaesthetic: 24 hours minimum. Some people feel back to normal sooner, but legally you are still impaired. When in doubt, wait longer. The law does not make exceptions for people who feel fine.

Plan ahead

Do not leave your transport arrangements to chance. Book your extraction knowing exactly how you are getting home. It makes the whole experience less stressful and ensures you recover safely.
