Why Is My Tooth Black After a Root Canal? And Can It Be Fixed?

The root canal is done. The tooth looks grey or black. That wasn't supposed to happen. Here's what causes tooth discolouration after RCT — and what can be done.

Why Does a Tooth Turn Black After a Root Canal?

Inside every tooth is a space called the pulp chamber. It contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue.

During a root canal, your dentist removes this pulp and fills the chamber with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha.

The tooth itself is now dead. Without blood flow, it can darken over time. This is normal and expected in some cases.

Other Possible Causes

Residual infection can cause staining from within. If any infected tissue was left behind, it may discolour the tooth from the inside.

Old filling materials used decades ago sometimes contained silver or other metals that cause grey staining.

Trauma before the root canal can also lead to long-term discolouration. A tooth that was hit may darken even after successful RCT.

Can It Be Fixed?

Yes. Internal bleaching is one option. Your dentist places a whitening agent inside the tooth to lift the stain.

Veneers cover the front surface of the tooth completely. They match your natural tooth colour and look seamless.

Crowns encase the entire tooth. This is often the best solution for back teeth that also need structural support.

When Should You Act?

Discolouration after a root canal is not an emergency. But it will not improve on its own.

Book a consultation to discuss your options. Your dentist will examine the tooth and recommend the most suitable treatment.
