What Is Tooth Autotransplantation? Moving One of Your Own Teeth to Fill a Gap

You've lost a tooth. An implant isn't suitable. Could one of your own teeth be moved to fill the gap? That's tooth autotransplantation — and it's a genuine clinical option in the right cases.

You've lost a tooth. Your dentist has mentioned implants, crowns, bridges — but there's another option that might work in the right situation. It's called tooth autotransplantation, and it uses one of your own teeth to fill the gap.

What is tooth autotransplantation?

Put simply, your dentist takes a tooth from one part of your mouth and moves it to fill a space where a tooth is missing. The transplanted tooth is your own, so your body accepts it well. It's most commonly used to replace a missing molar with another molar, or to fill a gap in a younger patient whose jaw is still developing.

When does it work best?

This isn't a treatment for every case. It works best when the tooth being moved has a healthy root and the receiving site is in good condition. It tends to be more successful in younger patients, but adults can benefit too. Your dentist will assess whether your mouth is suitable before recommending it.

What is the process?

Your dentist removes the donor tooth and transplants it into the gap. The tooth is then held in place while it heals and integrates with the bone. This can take a few months. In some cases, a root canal treatment is needed after the transplant has settled. Your dentist will monitor progress with regular check-ups.

Could it be right for you?

If you've lost a tooth and implants or bridges aren't ideal for your situation, it's worth asking whether autotransplantation could work. Not every practice offers it, but your dentist can tell you if it's a realistic option for you.
