Your teeth should feel firmly rooted in your jaw. When they start to feel different, it catches your attention right away.
A loose tooth is not always an emergency. But sometimes it needs same-day attention from a dentist.
What causes a tooth to feel loose?
Several things can make a tooth shift. Gum disease is one of the most common culprits. When plaque builds up below the gum line, it damages the bone that holds your teeth in place. Your teeth may start to move as that bone shrinks.
Physical injury is another cause. A fall, a sports impact, or even biting down on something very hard can loosen a tooth. This can happen even if there is no visible crack or chip.
Teeth grinding or clenching puts constant pressure on your teeth. Over time, this can cause mobility. Many people grind their teeth at night without realising it.
When is a loose tooth a real emergency?
Call your dentist immediately if your tooth is loose due to trauma. This includes falls, sports injuries, or any impact to your mouth. The sooner you get treatment, the better the chance of saving the tooth.
Seek urgent care if you also have bleeding from the gums that will not stop, severe pain, or swelling in your face or jaw. These could point to a more serious problem.
If your tooth feels loose and your gums are red, swollen, or pulling away from the tooth, do not wait. This is a sign of advanced gum disease that needs prompt treatment.
Can a loose tooth tighten back up?
It depends on the cause and how quickly you get help. Early-stage gum disease can be treated, and your teeth may stabilise. A tooth loosened by minor trauma might recover with rest and time.
But waiting is risky. The longer a loose tooth goes untreated, the more damage can occur. Do not assume it will sort itself out.
What will your dentist do?
Your dentist will examine your teeth and gums, possibly take an X-ray, and identify the cause of the looseness. Treatment might involve deep cleaning, a custom night guard, or procedures to stabilise the tooth.
In some cases, your dentist will monitor the tooth over time to see if it recovers. In others, early intervention makes all the difference.
