Your dentist has referred you for a surgical extraction. This is not a simple extraction. It means the tooth needs to be removed through a small surgical incision.
Why would a tooth need this approach? There are several reasons. The tooth might be impacted, meaning it has not fully erupted through the gum. It could be broken below the gum line. Or it might be positioned in a way that makes it impossible to grip with standard instruments.
What Happens During a Surgical Extraction?
Your dentist or oral surgeon will make a small incision in your gum. Sometimes a small amount of bone is removed to access the tooth. The tooth may be divided into pieces for easier removal. You will receive local anaesthetic so you will not feel pain during the procedure.
The entire process usually takes between 20 and 40 minutes. You should not feel any sharp pain. You might feel pressure and tugging, which is normal.
How Is Recovery Different from a Simple Extraction?
Recovery from a surgical extraction takes a little longer. You can expect some swelling. This usually peaks around day two or three and then gradually settles.
It is important to follow the aftercare instructions your dentist gives you. This includes resting for the first 24 hours. You should avoid rinsing your mouth vigorously for the first day. Stick to soft foods and avoid the extraction site when brushing.
When Should You Be Concerned?
Most people recover without any problems. However, you should contact your dentist if you experience heavy bleeding that does not stop. Also get in touch if the pain worsens after a few days instead of improving. A fever or increasing swelling are also reasons to call.
Surgical extractions sound daunting, but they are routine procedures. Your dental team will make sure you are comfortable throughout. If you have any concerns, ask them before the procedure begins.
