Stress and Your Teeth: The Hidden Link Between Tension and Oral Health

Stress can affect your mouth in ways you may not realise. From teeth grinding to gum disease, stress takes a toll on your smile.

Stress affects more than just your mood. It can harm your teeth and gums too. Many people do not connect their oral health problems with their stress levels.

Teeth Grinding and Jaw Clenching

Also called bruxism, teeth grinding often happens during sleep. Stress and anxiety are major triggers. Over time, grinding wears down enamel and can cause jaw pain or headaches.

You may not know you grind your teeth. Signs include a sore jaw in the morning, flattened tooth tops, or chips with no obvious cause.

Gum Disease and Stress

High stress levels weaken your immune system. This makes it harder for your body to fight off gum infections. Stress also makes some people neglect their oral hygiene routine.

  • Skipping brushing or flossing when stressed
  • Eating more sugary comfort foods
  • Grinding teeth at night

Mouth Sores

Stress can trigger canker sores and cold sores. These are painful but usually heal on their own within a couple of weeks.

What You Can Do

Talk to your dentist if you think you grind your teeth. We can fit you with a custom night guard to protect your enamel while you sleep.

Try to manage stress through exercise, relaxation, or talking to someone. A consistent oral hygiene routine matters even more when you are stressed.
