Your dentist has told you that you need implants in your upper jaw but do not have enough bone to support them. This is common. Many people who have been missing upper back teeth for a long time lose bone in that area. A sinus lift solves this problem.
What a Sinus Lift Actually Does
Your maxillary sinuses are air-filled spaces located just above your upper back teeth. When those teeth are lost, the sinus floor can drop and the bone beneath it becomes too thin for implants. A sinus lift raises the sinus membrane and adds bone graft material underneath it. This builds up the bone height so implants can be placed securely.
The procedure adds bone where it is needed most — between your jaw and your sinus cavity.
Who Needs This Procedure?
You might need a sinus lift if you have been missing upper molars or premolars for an extended period. Gum disease, age, and natural bone loss all contribute to this. Some people are born with less bone in the upper jaw, making implants impossible without additional support.
If your dentist has shown you a CT scan and pointed out that your bone height is insufficient, a sinus lift is likely on your treatment plan.
What Happens During the Procedure
The dentist makes a small opening in the gum where your missing tooth used to be. Through this, they gently push the sinus membrane upward, creating a small space. Bone graft material is placed into that space. The area is then closed with stitches.
You are under local anaesthetic for this. Some patients opt for sedation if they feel nervous. The procedure itself is not painful — you feel pressure and movement, but not sharp pain.
Recovery Time
Healing takes several months. The graft needs time to fuse with your existing bone before implants can be placed. This usually takes between four and nine months. During recovery, you might experience some swelling and congestion. Sneezing and blowing your nose aggressively should be avoided — your dentist will explain why.
Most patients manage well with standard pain relief and follow their aftercare instructions without issue.
Is It Worth It?
Absolutely. A sinus lift opens up the possibility of implants for people who otherwise would not have enough bone. Implants are the closest thing to natural teeth, and they protect the bone in your jaw from further loss. Without them, adjacent teeth can drift and your bite can change over time.
The procedure is predictable and well-established. Your dentist will talk you through every step before you commit.
