What Is a Sinus Lift Graft? The Procedure Before Dental Implants in the Upper Jaw

You need an implant in your upper jaw but there is not enough bone. Your dentist mentioned a sinus lift. That is a graft procedure that adds bone to your upper jaw. Here is what it involves.

You want a dental implant in your upper jaw. Your dentist tells you there is not enough bone to place it — and mentions a sinus lift. That sounds unfamiliar. Let us walk you through what it actually involves, because it is more straightforward than it sounds.

A sinus lift graft is a surgical procedure that adds bone to your upper jaw, in the area of your back teeth, near the sinus cavity. The sinus is a hollow space above your jawbone. When teeth are lost in this area, the bone can thin out over time. There may not be enough height to safely place an implant without first rebuilding the bone.

The procedure gently lifts the sinus membrane upward — just a small amount — and fills the space underneath with bone graft material. Over time, this graft integrates with your natural bone, creating a solid foundation for an implant.

What Happens During the Procedure

Your dentist or specialist makes a small opening in the gum where the implant will go. They access the bone beneath and carefully push the sinus membrane up. The bone graft material is placed into the space created. The area is then closed up and left to heal.

You are under local anaesthetic, so you will not feel anything during the procedure. Some patients report mild discomfort afterward — similar to after a tooth extraction. Most people manage this with standard pain relief and find it settles within a few days.

Healing and Timeline

Healing typically takes several months, usually between 4 and 9 months, before the graft is solid enough for an implant to be placed. During this time, the bone graft integrates with your natural bone. You will have regular check-ups to monitor progress.

Once healed, the implant can be placed in the usual way. The overall process takes longer than a standard implant — but it makes implant treatment possible for patients who otherwise would not have enough bone.

Is It Right for You?

Not everyone needs a sinus lift. It depends on how much bone you have and where the implant needs to go. Your dentist will assess this using 3D imaging, which gives a clear picture of your bone structure and the sinus position.

If you have been told you need a sinus lift, ask your dentist to walk you through the steps. Understanding the process tends to reduce anxiety — and the outcome is worth it.
