Sedation Dentistry for Children: What Parents Need to Know

Your child needs dental work and is too anxious to manage it. Sedation has been suggested. Is it safe? What type is used? Here is what every parent should know.

Your child needs dental work but they are too anxious to sit in the chair. Your dentist has mentioned sedation. You have questions — and that is completely normal.

Sedation dentistry for children is safe when used appropriately. Here is what every parent needs to know before making a decision.

What Types of Sedation Are Used for Children?

The most common option for anxious children is nitrous oxide, often called "laughing gas." It is breathed in through a small mask placed over the nose. Your child stays awake but feels relaxed and calm. The effects wear off quickly once the gas is stopped.

For more complex procedures or very anxious children, oral sedation (a liquid medication) or intravenous (IV) sedation may be used. General anaesthetic is reserved for the most challenging cases and is only provided in a hospital setting.

Is It Safe?

Sedation dentistry for children is considered safe. Dentists who offer it have specific training in paediatric sedation. Your child is medical history, weight, and age are all taken into account before any medication is given.

As with any medical procedure, there are risks. These are generally low but should be discussed with your dentist. Make sure you understand what to expect and how to care for your child after the procedure.

How Should You Prepare Your Child?

Honesty is best. Explain what will happen in simple, calm terms. Do not use words like "hurt" or "pain" — instead, talk about how the dentist will help their teeth feel better.

Bring a comfort item like a favourite toy or blanket. Plan a calm, quiet afternoon after the appointment, especially if your child is having oral or IV sedation.

Where Can You Get Expert Paediatric Sedation Care?

Not all dental practices offer sedation for children. If your child is anxious and you think sedation might help, ask your dentist. We have experience helping anxious children get the care they need safely and comfortably.
