How to Save Your Tooth Enamel — Before It's Gone

Tooth enamel is the hardest substance in your body, but it cannot regrow. Find out what wears it down and how to protect it.

Tooth enamel is the thin, hard outer layer of your teeth. It protects the sensitive inner layers from decay and sensitivity.

Once enamel is gone, it does not come back. Unlike bone or skin, enamel cannot regenerate. That makes protecting it essential.

What Wears Down Enamel

Acid is enamel's biggest enemy. Acid attacks the surface and slowly dissolves it. This is called dental erosion.

  • Fizzy drinks and fruit juices — even diet versions
  • Sweets and sugary snacks
  • Starchy foods like white bread and crisps
  • Acid reflux or heartburn
  • Brushing too hard or straight after eating
Warning Signs of Enamel Loss

Watch out for:

  • Teeth looking more yellow (the dentine underneath is showing)
  • Transparent or chipped edges
  • Increased sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods
  • Rough or irregular edges on teeth
How to Protect Your Enamel

Use a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride helps strengthen enamel and reverse early damage.

Wait at least 30 minutes after eating before you brush. Acid softens enamel temporarily — brushing too soon can wear it away faster.

Drink water throughout the day. Rinse your mouth after acidic drinks. Chew sugar-free gum to boost saliva flow, which neutralises acid.
