How to Prepare for Dental Sedation: What to Do Before Your Appointment

You've chosen sedation for your dental procedure. Now you need to prepare. Here's exactly what to do — and what not to do — before you arrive.

You've chosen sedation for your dental procedure. That's a great decision if anxiety has been holding you back. But sedation requires some preparation. Here's exactly what to do before you arrive.

Before Your Appointment

Your dentist will give you specific instructions — follow them carefully. Most sedation protocols require you to fast for several hours beforehand. This means no food or drink, including water, typically from midnight the night before your morning appointment.

This is essential. Sedation combined with a full stomach is dangerous. The fasting rule exists to protect you from aspiration if you vomit while sedated.

Medications

Tell your dentist about every medication you take. Include supplements and over-the-counter drugs. Some medications interact with sedation agents. Your dentist will tell you which medications to skip and which to take with a tiny sip of water.

Never skip your regular medications unless your dentist explicitly tells you to.

Arrange Your Transport

You cannot drive yourself home after sedation. The effects take time to wear off fully. You need a responsible adult to collect you and stay with you for several hours after the procedure.

Book your lift in advance. Don't rely on public transport or a taxi alone — you need someone with you who can help you inside and make sure you're safe.

What to Wear

Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Short sleeves are best for the monitoring equipment. Leave jewellery at home. Remove nail polish if you wear it — some sedation monitoring doesn't work well with certain polish colours.

Skip contact lenses. Your eyes might stay dry or feel uncomfortable during sedation.

After Your Procedure

Rest for the remainder of the day. Don't make any important decisions. Avoid operating machinery or signing legal documents. Take it easy — your body needs time to clear the sedation medication fully.

Your dentist will give you a detailed recovery plan. Follow it.
