What Is a Periodontist? The Gum Specialist Your Dentist Might Refer You To

You've been referred to a periodontist. That's a dentist who specialises in gums and the bone around your teeth. Here's what they treat and what to expect at your first appointment.

You've been referred to a periodontist. That means your dentist wants you to see a specialist in gums and the bone that supports your teeth. Here's what that means for your care.

What is a periodontist?

A periodontist is a dentist who has completed extra training specifically in gum disease and the structures around your teeth — the gums, bone, and ligaments. They diagnose and treat conditions that affect these tissues.

Gum disease is their main focus. They treat everything from early-stage gingivitis to advanced periodontitis that threatens the stability of your teeth.

Why would your dentist refer you?

Most referrals to a periodontist happen because your dentist has spotted signs of gum disease that need more advanced treatment than a standard cleaning can provide. You might have deep pockets around your teeth, significant bone loss, or gums that are receding.

Sometimes a periodontist is involved in planning for dental implants or cosmetic gum procedures too.

What happens at your first appointment?

The periodontist will examine your gums, measure the depth of the pockets around your teeth, and take X-rays to check bone levels. They'll explain exactly what's going on and discuss a treatment plan with you.

Treatment often starts with a deep clean below the gum line — sometimes done under local anaesthetic so you're comfortable throughout.

Is the referral permanent?

Not always. Many patients see the periodontist for a course of treatment and then return to their regular dentist for ongoing maintenance. Your dentist remains your primary care provider — the periodontist works alongside them for specialist care.

Worried about your gums?

Don't wait for a referral if you're concerned. Bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, or gums that look red and swollen are worth mentioning at your next appointment.
