What Is an Overdenture? When Dentures Are Secured With Dental Implants

Full dentures that slip and move are frustrating. An overdenture clips onto dental implants, giving much greater stability. Here is who it is suitable for and what it involves.

Full dentures change lives for the better when teeth have been lost. But they can also be frustrating — they slip when you eat, click when you talk, and sometimes feel loose at the worst moments. If this sounds familiar, an overdenture might be worth knowing about.

An overdenture is a full denture that is secured onto dental implants rather than sitting loosely on the gums. The denture clips onto the implants, which hold it firmly in place. You can still remove it for cleaning — but it stays firmly where it should be when you are eating, speaking, or smiling.

The difference in stability is significant. Patients who have struggled with loose dentures often describe the overdenture as life-changing in terms of comfort and confidence.

How Many Implants Do You Need?

You do not usually need an implant for every tooth. Most overdentures work well with just 2 to 4 implants in the lower jaw, or 4 to 6 in the upper jaw. The exact number depends on your jawbone, your budget, and your preferences.

The implants act as anchors. They are small titanium posts placed into the jawbone, exactly like those used for standard implants. Once they have integrated with the bone, the denture clips on top.

What the Process Involves

First, your dentist assesses whether you are a suitable candidate. This involves an examination and imaging to check your bone density and oral health. If you have been wearing dentures for years, some bone loss may have occurred — but this does not necessarily rule out implants.

The implants are placed under local anaesthetic. They then need a few months to bond with the bone — this is called osseointegration. Once healed, the overdenture is fitted and adjusted for comfort. Your dentist will show you how to clip it on and off and how to keep it clean.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Overdentures are particularly suitable for patients who have lost all their teeth in one or both jaws and currently struggle with conventional dentures. They are also a good option if you want more stability than dentures alone can offer but prefer something less invasive than a full set of individual implant crowns.

Good oral health and generally good health are important. Your dentist will review your medical history and discuss any concerns before proceeding.

If loose dentures are affecting your quality of life, an overdenture could be the solution you have been looking for.
