Fluoride is one of the most researched substances in dentistry. It is proven to strengthen enamel and reduce decay. But some people prefer natural alternatives.
Here is what we know about the most common options.
HydroxylapatiteHydroxylapatite is a form of calcium phosphate. It occurs naturally in tooth enamel. Some studies suggest it can help remineralise early decay.
It is considered safe and is used in some toothpastes. The evidence is promising but not yet as strong as fluoride.
XylitolXylitol is a natural sugar alcohol used as a sweetener. It does not feed the bacteria that cause decay. Some studies show it reduces cavity-causing bacteria.
Xylitol is safe but should not be consumed in large amounts. It can cause digestive issues in some people.
Oil PullingOil pulling involves swishing coconut or sesame oil in your mouth for 10–20 minutes. It is an ancient practice but the evidence for cavity prevention is limited.
Oil pulling is not a replacement for brushing with fluoride toothpaste.
Herbal and Natural ToothpastesMany natural toothpastes do not contain fluoride. Without fluoride, they are less effective at preventing decay. Look for products that have been clinically tested.
Our RecommendationFluoride toothpaste remains the gold standard for decay prevention. It is cost-effective and backed by decades of research.
If you choose to use fluoride alternatives, do not abandon fluoride entirely. Consider a fluoride toothpaste as your main product and discuss other options with your dentist.
