What Is Hall Crown Technique? The No-Injection, No-Drill Approach for Decayed Children's Teeth

Your child has a decayed baby molar. The dentist said they could put a crown on it without any injections or drilling. That sounds impossible — but the Hall technique is a well-established, evidence-based approach.

Your child has a decayed baby molar. The dentist said they could put a crown on it without any injections or drilling. That sounds impossible — but the Hall technique is a well-established, evidence-based approach.

What Is the Hall Technique?

The Hall technique is a method of placing a stainless steel crown on a baby molar with decay, without any injections, drilling, or tooth preparation. It was named after Dr. Norna Hall, a Scottish dentist who developed the approach in the 1990s.

The crown is simply cemented over the decayed tooth using a special dental adhesive. That's it. No numbing, no drilling, no temporary crown. Your child just bites down while the cement sets.

How Can a Crown Work Without Preparing the Tooth?

This is the clever part. The decay is left in place under the crown. The crown seals the tooth completely, cutting off the bacteria inside from their food supply — saliva and sugars from food and drink.

Without access to nutrients, the bacteria stop producing acid. The decay stops progressing. The tooth remains sealed and stable underneath the crown until it naturally falls out to make way for the adult tooth.

This sounds counterintuitive if you're used to conventional dentistry. But decades of research show it works. The decay doesn't spread because it's been effectively contained.

Does It Hurt?

For most children, the Hall technique is painless. There's no injection, no drilling, and no pressure from local anaesthetic. The only sensation is the mild pressure of the crown being pushed into place.

Some children report feeling a tight pressure sensation as the crown seats. This passes quickly. The cement sets fast, and your child can eat normally within an hour or so.

It can take a day or two for children to adjust to the feeling of the crown. It may feel slightly different when they bite down, but this is normal and temporary.

What Are the Advantages?

The main advantage is obvious — no injections or drilling. For anxious children, this is significant. The experience of visiting the dentist becomes much more positive.

Stainless steel crowns are extremely durable. They withstand the heavy chewing forces on back teeth and typically last until the baby tooth falls out naturally — often several years.

The technique is also cost-effective compared to conventional crowns that require multiple visits and significant tooth reduction.

Are There Any Drawbacks?

The main drawback is cosmetic. Stainless steel crowns are silver and visible when your child laughs or yawns. Some parents and children find this unacceptable, though many grow to accept it — especially once they understand why it's been done.

There's also a risk that the decay underneath could cause symptoms if the seal ever breaks. Regular check-ups are important to make sure the crown remains intact.

In rare cases, the decay progresses despite the crown. Your dentist will monitor this at each visit.

Is the Hall Technique Right for My Child?

Your dentist will assess whether the Hall technique is appropriate based on your child's age, the extent of the decay, and which tooth is affected. It works best on baby molars with moderate decay that hasn't reached the nerve.

If your child is suitable, it can be a far gentler alternative to conventional treatment. Many children who have experienced both actually prefer the Hall technique.
