Your child had fluoride varnish applied at school — or at the dentist. You have heard it helps prevent cavities. But how does fluoride varnish actually work, and is it something you should be concerned about?
What Fluoride Varnish Actually Is
Fluoride varnish is a highly concentrated form of fluoride that a dentist or dental therapist paints onto the surfaces of your child teeth. It sets quickly and releases fluoride over several hours.
The fluoride in the varnish gets absorbed into the outer layer of tooth enamel, making it stronger and more resistant to acid attacks from the bacteria that cause cavities. Think of it as a protective shield that reinforce your child teeth from the outside in.
How Often Should Fluoride Varnish Be Applied?
Dentists typically recommend applying fluoride varnish every six months, starting from the age of three or four. Some children at higher risk of cavities may need it more often — your dentist will let you know what right for your child.
In the UK, fluoride varnish applications are offered through the NHS dental scheme for children, and many schools also run programmes where dental teams come in to apply it.
Is Too Much Fluoride a Concern?
When applied professionally by a dentist, fluoride varnish is completely safe. The amounts used are much higher than in toothpaste but are applied topically and in controlled doses.
The only time fluoride becomes a concern is if a child swallows large amounts of toothpaste regularly over a long period — which is why you should always supervise brushing and use only a smear of toothpaste for under-threes.
Does Fluoride Varnish Replace Brushing?
No. Fluoride varnish is an addition to your daily brushing routine, not a replacement for it. You should still brush your child teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and limit sugary snacks and drinks.
The varnish works alongside your regular oral hygiene habits to give your child teeth extra protection where they need it most.
