Can a Failed Implant Be Replaced Immediately? What to Do When an Implant Fails

Your dental implant has failed. Can it be replaced right away — or do you need to wait? The answer depends on why it failed and the condition of the surrounding bone. Here is what determines the timeline.

Your dental implant has failed. Can it be replaced right away — or do you need to wait? The answer depends on why it failed and the condition of the surrounding bone. Here is what determines the timeline.

What Does Implant Failure Actually Mean?

A dental implant fails when it does not integrate properly with the jawbone, or when it becomes loose after initially seeming stable. Early failures happen within the first few months before osseointegration — the process of bone fusing to the implant — is complete. Late failures can occur years later, sometimes due to infection or overload.

Can It Be Replaced Immediately?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. If the failure is caught early and there is no infection and the bone is still intact, your dentist or surgeon might be able to place a new implant straight away. This is called immediate placement. It saves time and avoids a second surgical procedure.

However, if there is infection, significant bone loss, or the failure happened later, you will likely need to wait. The socket needs to heal fully — this can take three to six months, sometimes longer. Bone grafting may also be needed to rebuild the site before a new implant can be placed.

Why Does the Timeline Vary?

The key factors are the cause of failure, the amount of bone remaining, and whether infection is present. An implant that failed due to too much pressure or overload without infection might allow immediate replacement. One that failed due to peri-implantitis — an inflammatory condition that destroys bone — almost always requires healing time and often bone regeneration first.

What Should You Do Now?

If your implant feels loose or you have pain around it, see your dentist as soon as possible. The sooner the issue is assessed, the more options you are likely to have. Do not ignore it. Early intervention almost always leads to a better outcome, and your dental team will guide you through the safest path to a replacement.
