When you lose a tooth, your dentist might suggest a dental bridge to fill the gap. A bridge is made up of two crowns on the teeth next to the missing tooth, with a false tooth in between. That false tooth is called a pontic.
What Exactly Is a Pontic?
The pontic is the replacement tooth that sits in the space where your natural tooth used to be. It is anchored in place by the crowns on either side, which are cemented onto the supporting teeth. The pontic does the work of a real tooth — it lets you chew properly and keeps your other teeth from shifting out of place.
Unlike a dental implant, a pontic does not have a root. It sits on top of the gum line. It is designed to look just like your natural teeth, so most people will not even notice it is there.
Different Pontic Designs
There are several shapes a pontic can take. Your dentist will recommend the best one for your situation.
The most common type is the ridge lap pontic. It fits snugly against the gum tissue and gives a natural appearance. The sanitary pontic has a small gap underneath, making it easier to clean but less natural-looking. The ovate pontic is rounded and sits in a socket-like shape in the gum, giving the most lifelike result. This type often requires ridge preservation at the time of extraction.
What to Expect During Treatment
Getting a bridge with a pontic usually takes two appointments. At the first visit, your dentist shapes the supporting teeth and takes an impression. A temporary bridge is placed while your custom pontic is made. At the second visit, the permanent bridge is fitted and cemented.
With good care, a dental bridge can last ten to fifteen years or longer. Brush and floss around the bridge carefully to keep the supporting teeth healthy underneath.
Is a Bridge Right for You?
Not everyone is a candidate for a bridge. You need strong teeth on either side of the gap to support the crowns. If those teeth are not strong enough, an implant might be a better option.
