Your Dental Crown: How Long It Lasts and How to Make It Work Longer

Crowns are strong — but they're not invincible. Here's what affects how long yours will last, and the warning signs you shouldn't ignore.

You finally got the crown. The pain is gone. The tooth is protected. You might even forget which tooth it is — until something changes.

Dental crowns are one of the most reliable restorations in dentistry. But they are not permanent. They are not immune to problems. And the tooth beneath them still needs care.

How Long Does a Dental Crown Actually Last?

The average lifespan of a well-made crown is 10 to 15 years. Some last 20 years or more. Some fail much sooner. The difference comes down to a few predictable factors.

Porcelain crowns look the most like natural teeth. Metal-ceramic crowns are stronger — better for back teeth where biting forces are greatest. Gold crowns are the most durable of all — they expand and contract with temperature like natural tooth structure, making them less likely to crack or debond.

Your crown material should match where it's being used. Your dentist chooses it for a reason.

The Warning Signs Your Crown Is in Trouble

Dark line at the gum margin. A grey or black line where the crown meets the gum usually means the underlying metal is showing. This is cosmetic — but it can also signal that the crown edge is no longer sealing properly, allowing bacteria underneath.

Pain or sensitivity when biting. If your crown hurts when you bite down, the crown may be too high, or there may be an issue with the tooth beneath it.

Movement or wobble. A crown should not move. If it does, the cement may have failed — or there may be decay underneath that's loosened it.

Food packing around the crown. If you're suddenly getting food trapped around a crown, the seal has broken or the crown shape has changed. Bacteria will follow.

The Crown Can Be Fine. The Tooth Beneath It May Not Be.

One of the most important things patients do not realise: a crown does not protect the tooth inside it from further decay or infection.

Decay can form at the crown margin — the edge where the crown meets the tooth. If left untreated, the decay works its way beneath the crown and into the root. By the time that pain arrives, the tooth may need a root canal — or it may not be salvageable at all.

This is why the tooth under a crown needs the same cleaning and care as every other tooth.

How to Make Your Crown Last Longer
  • Brush around the crown margin carefully — bacteria collects there
  • Floss daily, especially around the crown margin
  • Avoid chewing extremely hard foods on the crowned tooth — ice, hard sweets, olive pits
  • Address teeth grinding with a night guard if recommended
  • Come for regular check-ups — X-rays can detect decay beneath crowns before it becomes visible or painful

Can a Crown Fall Off?

Yes. Crowns debond — the cement loses its hold — and they can come off. This is usually not an emergency, but it does need prompt attention.

If your crown falls off: keep it, do not chew on that tooth, and call the practice. In many cases, the same crown can be recemented if the underlying tooth is intact. If the tooth has fractured or decayed, a new crown — or a different solution — will be needed.

If your crown is more than 10 years old, or if you've noticed any of the warning signs above, book a check-up. An X-ray takes seconds and tells us exactly what's happening beneath the crown.

At Meads Village Dental Practice, we assess crown health at every routine appointment. We'll tell you honestly whether your crown is fine, needs monitoring, or needs to be replaced.
