Why Does My Dental Crown Look Grey at the Gum Line?

Your crown looked fine when it was new. Now there is a dark line at the edge. Here is what is happening — and whether it needs to be fixed.

Your crown looked fine when it was new. Now there is a dark line at the edge. Here is what is happening — and whether it needs to be fixed.

This is one of the most common crown complaints. Patients notice it and worry something is wrong. Let us explain what causes it and what your options are.

Why Does the Grey Line Appear?

Most crowns have a metal base underneath the porcelain. This metal makes the crown strong. But metal shows through over time, especially at the gum line.

Your gums recede naturally with age. This exposes the crown edge where no gum covers it. The grey line was always there. Your gums just shrunk enough to show it.

Another cause is the metal corroding. Crown metal can oxidise slowly. This darkens the edge. It is more common with older crowns or cheaper metals.

Is It a Problem or Just Cosmetic?

The grey line is usually cosmetic. It does not mean your crown is failing. Your tooth underneath is still protected. The crown stays firmly in place.

Sometimes the darkness indicates decay underneath. Bacteria slip under the crown edge. This causes the darkness you see. Your dentist checks for this with an X-ray.

Pain, sensitivity, or swelling alongside the grey line are red flags. These symptoms mean something is wrong beneath the crown. See your dentist soon.

Can It Be Fixed Without Replacing the Crown?

Sometimes yes. If the issue is gum recession only, a deep clean helps. Your dentist cleans under the gum line. This removes staining and bacteria.

Cosmetic contouring can minimise the visible edge. This smooths the transition between crown and tooth. It works for mild cases.

Bleaching does not work on crowns. The crown material does not whiten like natural teeth. Do not waste money on whitening treatments.

When Is Crown Replacement Necessary?

Replacement is needed if decay is present underneath. The old crown comes off. The decay gets removed. A new crown fits over the repaired tooth.

Replacement also makes sense if the grey line bothers you socially. Zirconia crowns have no metal base. They look completely natural. No dark line ever appears.

All-metal crowns are another option. Gold does not corrode or show grey. Some patients prefer this durability for back teeth.

How to Prevent the Grey Line

Choose zirconia or all-ceramic crowns for front teeth. These have no metal underneath. They stay natural-looking for life.

Maintain excellent gum health. Brush gently along the gum line. Floss daily. Healthy gums keep the crown edge hidden.

See your dentist for regular checks. X-rays catch problems early. Your crown lasts longer with professional monitoring.
