Seeing your child's first smile is one of those moments you never forget. But did you know their dental health journey starts much earlier than you might think?
The first dental visit sounds like a big deal — and it is — but it's also one of the simplest appointments you'll ever have. Your dentist just wants to take a quick look at your child's teeth, jaw, and bite. They're checking that everything is developing as it should.
When Should Your Child First See a Dentist?
The official recommendation is within six months of the first tooth appearing — or by their first birthday, whichever comes first. That might feel impossibly young, but it's actually the perfect time.
Those early visits help your child get comfortable with the dental surgery. They also catch any potential problems before they become serious ones.
What Happens at That First Appointment?
Very little, honestly. The dentist will sit you and your child in the chair and take a gentle look inside their mouth. They'll check the existing teeth (if any) and the gums.
You can ask questions too. How are you cleaning those few teeth? Is thumb-sucking going to be a problem? What about fluoride?
This visit is really about guidance and building confidence — for both of you.
How to Prepare Your Toddler
Talk about it positively before you go. Read books about going to the dentist. Play "dentist" at home and take turns being the patient.
Don't ever use the dentist as a threat. Phrases like "if you don't brush, the dentist will drill" create real anxiety that lasts for years.
Book the appointment for a time when your child is usually happy and alert — not during nap time or when they're hungry.
What If My Child Is Scared?
That's completely normal. Some children cry at first. The dental team has seen it all before and they know exactly how to handle nervous little ones.
Stay calm yourself. Children pick up on your energy. If you're relaxed, they stand a much better chance of being relaxed too.
The more often they visit, the more familiar it becomes. Those early positive experiences pay off enormously as they grow.
