Invisalign can correct many cases of overbite — but the degree of success depends on how severe the overbite is and what is driving it. Understanding the difference is key to knowing whether Invisalign is the right choice for you.
What Is an Overbite?
An overbite (also called a deep bite) is when the upper front teeth overlap the lower front teeth significantly when the mouth is closed. A small overbite of 1-2mm is normal. When the upper teeth cover more than 30-40% of the lower teeth, it's considered a moderate to severe overbite. In extreme cases, the lower teeth may actually touch the gum tissue behind the upper teeth.
What Causes an Overbite
Most overbites are caused by a discrepancy in jaw size — the upper jaw is too large or the lower jaw is too small relative to each other. This is primarily genetic. Some overbites develop from habits in childhood, such as thumb sucking or prolonged dummy use, or from tongue posture habits.
When Invisalign Works
For mild to moderate overbites (up to about 4-5mm of overlap), Invisalign can produce excellent results, particularly in younger patients whose jawbones are still developing or have only recently finished growing. Clear aligners can intrude the upper front teeth and upright the lower front teeth, reducing the overbite and improving the bite relationship.
For moderate to severe overbites, treatment may take longer and may require additional techniques such as elastics (rubber bands) to help correct the jaw relationship, or a combination of braces and aligners.
When It May Not Be Enough
Severe skeletal overbites — where the jaw discrepancy is significant — often require orthognathic (jaw) surgery in addition to braces or aligners. In these cases, orthodontics alone cannot change the underlying jaw structure enough to fully correct the overbite.
The best way to find out whether your overbite can be treated with Invisalign is a consultation with an orthodontist. We can assess your jaw relationship and show you what results are realistically achievable.
