Root Canal Retreatment: When and Why a Root Canal Might Need to Be Redone

Your root canal was done years ago. Now it is hurting again. Does that mean it failed? And what are your options?

Your root canal was done years ago. Now it is hurting again. Does that mean it failed? And what are your options?

It is more common than you think. Sometimes a tooth that had a root canal years ago starts hurting again. This does not always mean the dentist made a mistake. It means the tooth needs another look.

Why Does a Root Canal Need to Be Redone?

Your original root canal healed well at the time. But teeth change. A new cavity can form under the crown. The filling might crack. Or bacteria can re-enter through a small gap.

Gum disease can also cause problems. When the bone around the tooth gets infected, it attacks the root tip. This creates pain even if the original root canal was perfect.

Your bite changes over time too. Too much pressure on one tooth can crack it. A cracked root is hard to save. That is when retreatment becomes necessary.

What Happens During Root Canal Retreatment?

Your dentist opens the tooth again. The old filling comes out. Every canal is cleaned, measured, and disinfected. Your dentist looks for hidden canals that were missed first time.

This takes longer than the first root canal. You will be numb. You might need a crown after to protect the weakened tooth. The goal is to save your natural tooth.

Is It Better Than Extraction?

Yes, whenever possible. Your natural tooth is always the best option. Implants are great but nothing feels like your own tooth. Retreatment lets you keep it.

The success rate is high. Most teeth last many years after retreatment. Your dentist will tell you honestly if extraction is the smarter choice. Trust that conversation.

How Do You Know If You Need Retreatment?

Pain when chewing is a red flag. Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers is another. Swelling near the tooth is serious. See your dentist right away if any of these show up.

Sometimes there are no symptoms at first. That is why regular check-ups matter. X-rays catch problems before they start hurting. Do not skip your dental reviews.

Do Not Wait If Your Tooth Hurts

Ignoring pain never makes it better. It usually gets worse. An infected tooth can turn into a dental emergency. The longer you wait, the fewer options you have.

Your comfort matters. Modern retreatment is straightforward. You will not be in pain during the procedure. Your dentist makes sure of that.
