What Is a Dental Technician? The Lab Professional Behind Your Crowns, Bridges, and Dentures

Your crown was made in a dental laboratory by a technician you have never met. Dental technicians are skilled professionals who design and make the prosthetic work that goes in your mouth. Here is what their role involves.

You are having a crown fitted next week. You know your dentist will be doing the preparation. But have you ever wondered who actually makes the crown? The answer is a dental technician, and you have probably never met them.

Dental technicians work largely behind the scenes. Their skill and precision are what make many dental treatments possible.

What does a dental technician do?

A dental technician works in a dental laboratory, crafting the prosthetic devices that go into your mouth. These include crowns, bridges, dentures, veneers, and orthodontic appliances.

They work from prescriptions and impressions provided by your dentist. Using materials like porcelain, acrylic, metal alloys, and increasingly digital scanning and 3D printing, they design and manufacture custom-fitted devices to exact specifications.

How do they work with your dentist?

Your dentist takes impressions or digital scans of your teeth and sends them to the lab with a detailed prescription. The technician then crafts the restoration or appliance to match the dentist requirements.

Communication between dentist and technician is key. If a crown does not fit quite right, the dentist sends it back with notes. The technician adjusts and refines until the fit is precise.

How long does training take?

Dental technicians train for several years, often through a combination of academic study and practical laboratory experience. They must be registered with the General Dental Council to practise legally in the UK.

Many specialise in specific areas — such as crown and bridge work, dentures, or orthodontics — developing expert skills in their chosen field.

Why does it matter to you?

The quality of your crown, bridge, or denture depends directly on the skill of the technician who makes it. A well-crafted restoration looks natural, fits comfortably, and lasts longer.
